Exhibition Research

Posters and Flyers

We will be making posters to advertise our exhibition. We have decided that rather then choosing one image to represent out exhibition we would prefer to have a separate poster, one for each of us with one of our images. The reason behind this is that we worked so strongly as a group we felt that it would be unfair to have to choose one person to represent us. We have yet to print our posters and flyers but will do so closer to the exhibition.

House Gallery

We visited Sarah who runs House Gallery in Camberwell. She informed us about the proposal we would have to submit and we spoke about hosting a fundraising event there. The gallery is within our budget and we like the space, however the dates offered to us (21st September- October 4th) conflicted with a group member being out of the country at the time the exhibition would be opening. Sarah also had said she had a space for us between 3oth November – 21st of december, but we feel that this is the wrong time of year to be holding an exhibition. Ideally we would like too exhibit at the end of summer and just before term starts for third year.

  • Gallery hire at HOUSE costs £200 per week or £300 for two weeks. We offer a reduced rate to students of £180 per week or £250 for two weeks.
  • Sales are negotiated between the artist and the buyer, the gallery does not charge commission on sales.

Curating Notes after tutorials with MA students

  • Frames- light coloured ones will separate the work from it’s exterior, making it stand out against the frame. Dark coloured frames create a sense of claustrophobia within the work, really holding it within its boarders.
  • Experiment with positioning of work when in the gallery, our ideas of where we want our want to be will probably change once we are actually in the space
  • could try displaying all of our artwork together rather than having a separate wall each
  • work can often be read as triptychs or diptychs, make sure there is enough space, or perhaps hardly any space, between each frame.
  • The window space in House Gallery could be useful to create a separate piece of work relating to the exhibition that we all create together.
  • Could play to the smallness of the gallery, darken it, use spotlights
  • Could open up the space, block off the smaller areas
  • Rather than using the conventional method of hanging on the wall could use floor space, plinths etc
  • Decide on collective statement, look at examples of how to display this

Examples of ways in which shows have been advertised. We would prefer to be able to include an image from each of us on our poster rather than selecting one person’s image as we feel this is important for our position as a group.

The Crypt Gallery

So I spoke to Claire Pinney about the Crypt gallery, it can be hired for £475, with an additional £30 per day for however long you want to exhibit. And those are the student prices! It would take a lot of fund raising! Also it’s all booked up until February of next year, apart from a small opening in August. If we ever did choose to exhibit there we would have to sent her a proposal, with an example of work from each of us.

Helen

I have my PDD interview on Tuesday with Claire Pinney who is the curator of The Crypt Gallery near Kings Cross. In an interview I read   online she said the gallery welcomes student work, so I think I’ll mention our exhibition plans to her on the off chance she’s interested! It’s a really amazing gallery space.

This article shows a variety of lesser known/alternative galleries in London. Might find some inspiration here for our exhibition space.
