American photographer Brooke Shaden works in the realm of self portraiture but in a less common way then most. She began being her own subject in order to have full control over the images, and has since grown into a self-portrait artist. However for her it is not autobiographical in nature. Instead, she attempts to place herself within worlds she wishes we could live in, where secret spaces exist freely, where the impossible thrives. By using painterly techniques as well as the square format, traditional photographic properties are replaced by otherworldly elements. Brooke’s photography explores what it is to be feminine through an altogether wonderful and unusual approach. There is a sense of slight stillness in these images, they feel like a floating tranquil motion has been freeze framed.
